During an endoscopic procedure, it’s common to need a mechanism for retrieving tissue or foreign bodies. However, each procedure has different needs dependent on the type of retrieval, size of material retrieved, and placement. Luckily, there are options to suit a variety of providers’ needs. A few of these options are loop retrievers, retrieval baskets, and retrieval forceps.

These retrieval solutions, overall, provide a similar function but can be used in different circumstances, which are reflected in their design.

Looped retrievers

The primary function of looped retrievers is to retrieve foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract, including food impactions. These can include a variety of objects like food boluses, coins, or small toys that have been accidentally swallowed. The retrievers are designed to provide a secure grip on foreign objects. Additionally, looped retrievers may be used to manipulate or reposition other endoscopic medical devices.

The looped design provides a blunt end, which helps minimize the risk of mucosal trauma during usage. This design ensures that the procedure is not only effective but also safe for the patient.

Retrieval baskets

Used in retrieving foreign bodies, tissue, and stones in the gastrointestinal tract, retrieval baskets typically consist of a flexible wire basket that can be opened and closed. To accommodate a variety of medical situations as well as shapes and sizes of objects, they are generally available in configurations such as three or four wire helical designs and come with different sizes of open basket diameters.

Many retrieval baskets are designed for smooth rotation, providing physicians with precise control during the procedure. This aspect is crucial for the careful navigation and manipulation required in confined and sensitive body areas. They are ideal for retrieving larger or irregularly shaped foreign bodies or objects that are difficult to grasp directly.

Retrieval forceps

Retrieval forceps are used to remove foreign bodies and tissue samples, as well as to help guide or position other endoscopic medical devices during a procedure. They typically have a pair of tongs or jaws at the end, which can be opened and closed to grasp objects.

Forceps are ideal for situations in which precision is key. They allow for targeted and controlled grip, making them ideal for retrieving smaller, discrete objects or taking biopsies. The provider can carefully grasp and extract the object without affecting surrounding tissue.
