The ability of practitioners to offer minimally invasive procedures is continually evolving. In gastro-intestinal surgery, endoscopic procedures wouldn’t be the same without the electrocautery polypectomy snare.

The high-frequency current of the electrocautery snare uses the precise amount of heat generated by a monopolar cautery machine to affect contacting tissue, without damaging the tissue around it, also enabling hemostasis during procedures. Polypectomy snares offer incredible precision to control tissue resection and collection. They allow doctors to remove polyps or abnormal growths from the gastrointestinal tract with minimal invasiveness.

The type of snare you choose depends on the needs of your procedure. Below we discuss the difference between short throw and standard snares as well as the most common loop shapes: oval and hexagonal.

Short Throw vs. Standard Polypectomy Snares

Short throw polypectomy snares are designed for user comfort. They have a shorter handle than a standard polypectomy snare. The compact handle enables greater control, with more ergonomic efficiency and comfort, for physicians or nurses with smaller hands or for those who find the standard length uncomfortable.

Oval vs. Hexagonal Polypectomy Snares

Oval polypectomy snares are often the best option for straight-forward procedures with uniformly shaped polyps. The shape may have just a single projection, or a mushroom shape, in which case, these can be easily captured and excised with an oval shape snare. Oval snares are designed for ease-of-use and maneuverability, making them both quick and efficient tools.

Hexagonal polypectomy snares are often favored in situations where a polyp has an irregular or more complex shape. The polyp may have multiple projections or the endoscopist may need to capture the tissue with more angular accuracy. The hexagonal loop is secure and adaptable in more complex situations, making it less likely to slip when maneuvering around irregularly shaped polyps.
